Choosing the Right Dental Products

Choosing the Right Dental Products With so many dental products to choose from – how do you know which ones are right for you? Whether it’s a powered or a manual toothbrush, you have a variety of choices that can confuse you. Regardless of the brand or the cost, you need products that are suited just for you and to help you maintain good oral hygiene. Here are some tips for the basic products you will need to maintain good oral care.

Toothbrushes

When shopping for toothbrushes, you should choose a toothbrush that fits your mouth and has the right length and shape to reach all of your teeth. Use a soft-bristled brush. Most manufacturers make brushes that are soft, medium or hard-bristled. Hard-bristled brushes are not good for your gums. Soft-bristled brushes are the better option. Powered toothbrushes do a better job of cleaning the teeth and make brushing easier. This is also a good option for individuals whose motor skills are challenged.

Toothpaste

Be sure to use toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride protects your teeth against cavities and harmful foods and beverages and strengthens the outer tooth enamel of your teeth. It also helps to reduce dental infections and tooth decay. There are a wide variety of kinds of toothpaste to choose from including:

  • Tartar Control Toothpaste
  • Sensitivity Toothpaste
  • Whitening Toothpaste
  • Toothpaste containing baking soda
  • Tooth Gel
  • Toothpaste made for children

If you are allergic to fluoride, consult Dr. Dham or your primary care physician to discuss your options.

Mouth Rinse and Mouthwash

There has always been some confusion about the differences between mouth rinses and mouthwashes. They are not the same. Most mouth rinses contain fluoride that protects your teeth from acids produced by plaque build-up. Mouth rinses also help protect against cavities.

Mouthwashes generally contain alcohol and unless stated on the label, do not contain fluoride. Mouthwashes freshen your breath, but they don’t clean your teeth. Also, if the product contains alcohol, it is not suitable for children. Be sure to read the labels carefully before making your selection.
